Sportscenter

My older brother Josh was a sports fanatic growing up.  He would throw baseballs up in the air and catch them in his glove while we were watching TV.  He would toss me Nerf footballs when I walked in a room and then tackle me when I caught them.  He had tan lines from the wrist bands he wore constantly and a permanent crease in his hair from his baseball hat.  His room was covered in pennants and posters of sports stars.  He idolized George Brett (my parents grew up in Missouri so we were big KC Royals fans up until the Colorado Rockies were introduced).  He played soccer, baseball and football.  But baseball was always his first love.  In fact, I spent a good portion of my summers sitting through baseball games and tournaments he was playing in.

And while Josh was definitely the biggest fanatic, he wasn't the only sports enthusiast in the family.  My dad played football at the University of Missouri and when we were growing up, he coached high school football, track and cross country as well as my summer recreational track team.  My mom coached me in soccer for a few years before I hung up my cleats to dedicate myself to gymnastics.  And all 4 of us were big fans of our local pro sports teams in Denver where I grew up.  Yes, I am a John Elway fan if you are wondering.

I still love sports.  I like watching them on TV (although I've become a much bigger Seattle fan after living here for 12 years), I like going to games, and I like playing the few things my injured knees can still handle (too much gymnastics & soccer).  So I always hoped that when I had kids that they would like sports as well.

While it is too early to tell if Kate will take a long-term interest in sports, living with Jack is like being in my own version of SportsCenter.  He is obsessed with sports.  He talks about them constantly - he literally says the word "basketball" about 100 times a day.  He walks around with balls, bats, gloves, clubs, etc. in his hands at all times.  He only wants to wear clothes which display some sort of sporting equipment.  He only wants to watch sports on TV.  He'll even hand you the remote and say "basketball on?"  His favorite sport seems to be basketball but golf is a close second.  One day he threw a fit because Kate wanted to watch Strawberry Shortcake and he wanted to watch the Final Four.  When Strawberry Shortcake was finally over, we turned on the game.  He ran into the family room, climbed up into our leather recliner, grabbed Dave's golf magazine and started flipping through it while he watched the game.  I almost wanted to go get him a beer to make the picture complete.  But I settled for a sippy cup of milk instead.

Here is just a sampling of what I'm talking about.

His favorite pajamas

Playing basketball at the park

 His favorite shirt

And the shoes - high tops no less

His football jacket

Playing golf

And baseball

And basketball

And Soccer

It is so fun watching his personality develop.  He is all boy through and through.  And I might add, the cutest boy I've ever seen.  Wouldn't you agree?

Easter

The Easter Bunny is still very tired from this weekend's festivities.  But I'm taking a few moments to share some of the highlights before I take a nice long nap (I wish).

Kate and I actually kicked off the Easter festivities last week by going to see "Hop" at the movie theater.  We had a great time and she even shared her licorice with me!

On Saturday we had a rare day of sunshine.  It actually got over 60 degrees - that may have been the first time this year.  You will notice that Jack is wearing shorts and Kate has a sundress on.  We took full advantage of the sun.  We were invited to an impromptu egg hunt in the Schufreider's back yard with Luke and Chloe.  This was Jack's first egg hunt and he seemed to catch on just fine.  But he did get bored after about the 10th egg and put down his basket to go play.

After the kids went to bed and the rain started coming down once again, the Easter Bunny got to work hiding eggs and setting out the baskets of goodies.  This year the Bunny got pails in lieu of baskets which can be used outside for all sorts of fun (if it is ever sunny again).  Wasn't that smart of the Bunny?

Kate received the Barbie she has been wishing for and Jack got his first real basketball.  Have I mentioned he likes basketball?

They found all of the eggs hidden throughout the downstairs before settling down to have some breakfast.

The kids also each got one present from Mommy & Daddy.  We have a rule that we can only get them gifts on special occasions.  So I tend to go a little overboard any time a holiday rolls around!  Kate received a little Strawberry Shortcake doll house, which is just so funny since I grew up on Strawberry Shortcake myself.  And Jack got a Stand 'n Play rampway for his cars.

When Jack went down for his nap, Kate and I dyed some eggs which turned out beautifully.

And after naptime, we finished out the day by going over to Grandma & Poppa Larsen's for a delicious Easter dinner!  Uncle Jeff was in town from Gonzaga and Uncle Kevin & Aunt Kari were there too.

Whew!  What a busy weekend!  No wonder I'm tired!  Well off to rest these big Bunny feet.  Until next year...

Spirit Week

This week was spirit week at the kids' daycare.  There was a different theme each day that the whole school took part in.

Monday was Sports Clothing day.  So Jack and Kate wore their matching Sounders shirts.  I realize that it won't be long before they will tell me that it is "uncool" to dress in matching shirts.  So until that time comes, I will take any opportunity I can get.  Jack is holding up his golf club.  He is a fan of all sports.

Tuesday was pajama day...and kisses for Kate day!  These are Jack's favorite pajamas.  He wants to wear them every night and gets mad when they are dirty.  I should have bought multiple pairs.

Wednesday was crazy hair day.  So Kate and I started preparing the day before by putting a bunch of little braids in her hair.  Then we took them all out in the morning and added a few colorful hair clips.  Totally 80s.  Who needs a crimping iron?

Jack got some product in his hair for a little spike action.  Notice the basketball shirt.

Thursday was crazy hat day.  So Jack wore his sock monkey hat and Kate wore her cowgirl hat.  Jack doesn't really like getting his picture taken so I don't often get a smile out of him.  This is as close as it gets.  And Kate is perfecting her fake "cheese" smile.

Kate also got to make a fabulous hat out of paper for their craft project that day.

On Friday all of the kids were supposed to wear their red school shirts that they wear when they go on field trips (so they can be spotted easily in a crowd).  The infant rooms don't have shirts because they don't get to go on field trips yet.  So their teachers were nice enough to make each child their own special shirt.  Jack's has a basketball on it.  Have I mentioned he likes sports?

What a fun week!

A Day on the Island

Today we spent the day on Anderson Island (a ferry ride from Steilacoom) to celebrate Dave's grandmother Marge's 90th birthday.  It was a great chance to visit with all of his aunts, uncles and cousins that we rarely get to see.  And we got to enjoy another rare occurrence - a full day of sunshine!  So we spent a lot of time outside and were able to capture some good pictures of the kids.
